Biographie / Biography:

Certified Montreal Academy Teacher Since 2012

An amazing teacher who knows how to inspire, Sarah is a graduate of the University of Manitoba and the University of Toronto. She has received additional training through the Opera as Theatre Program at the Banff Centre, Centre d’Arts Orford, St. Andrews Opera Workshop, Opera on the Avalon, and the Institut Canadien d’Art Vocal (ICAV).

Sarah has been teaching voice for 6 years, and has taught students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Sarah believes each student has their own individual learning style and musical goals, and she strives to identify the best way to relate to each of her students in a way that they will find encouraging, inspiring, and artistically satisfying.

Music started to become an important part of Sarah’s life when she began taking singing lessons at age 9. In high school, she became involved in jazz choirs, chamber choirs, and the musical theatre program at her school. Singing and performing have brought her great joy, experiences, and friendships, and she is thrilled to be able to pass on the gift of music to others through teaching.

Sarah has had extensive training and performance experience as a classical singer. She recently performed the role of La Fée in Massenet's Cendrillon with Opera da Camera in Montreal and performed as a soloist with Ensemble Arkea (Gougeon's Six thèmes solaires), Ensemble Vocalys (Cantata BWV 147), FestivalOpéra de Saint-Eustache (Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte) Theatre of Early Music (The Heart's Solace) and The Church of St. Andrew & St. Paul with the OSM Players Association (Bach's Magnificat). In 2012-2013, she made company debuts with Toronto's Against the Grain Theatre (Kafka/Janáček/Kurtág) and Ottawa's Thirteen Strings (Bach Easter Cantatas), and performed the music of Bernstein, Porter, and Sondheim in American Salon: Syncopated City with Off Centre Music Salon in Toronto.

In 2011-2012, Sarah appeared with the Saskatoon Opera in Purcell’s King Arthur, performed Handel’s Messiah with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, and was a guest performer at the Cluster New Music Festival.

Previous engagements include her Manitoba Opera debut as First Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Belinda in Dido and Aeneas with Opera on the Avalon, and performances of John Estacio’s Lillian Alling at the Banff Centre. She has also performed as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble. Other roles have included Bastienne in Bastien und Bastienne, Dortchen in The Brothers Grimm, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore, and Despina in Così fan tutte.
