Biographie / Biography:
Certified Montreal Academy of Music teacher since 2015.
A wonderful addition to our team, Myrtle holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2000) and Graduate Diploma in Advanced Music Performance Studies (2005) from Concordia University in classical flute.
Her musical journey began at the age of 7 when she started taking private piano lessons and continued at Vanier College; formally 15 years altogether. During her flute studies in 1998 to 2000 she became the principal flautist of the Concordia University Orchestra, and served as 2nd chair 2001 to 2006 of the apprenticeship FACE Symphony Orchestra (FSO).
Throughout her flute studies, Myrtle had become active as a vocalist, conductor and vocal coach; fueled by ongoing participation in gospel choirs from 1992 to present. From 2000 to 2007 she began to explore in detail her vocal capabilities through Jazz vocal studies at Concordia, intense ‘sing-speech’ technique studies and private classical voice studies. All the while involved in classical, gospel, soul, and pop music vocal and instrumental ensembles.
Her versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, with the ability to bridge the gaps between Classical, Gospel/Jazz, and R&B styles have given her many varied teaching, performance, and recording opportunities.
In 2013 she had the rewarding experience of working with autistic students at the Giant Steps School through the Viva Sistema program. In 2014, she was awarded the role of ‘The Other Woman’ and chorister for the L’Opera de Montreal premiere of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. In 2015 she returned from two consecutive international World cruise tours where she operated as a vocalist, pianist, and flutist for Holland America Cruiselines. She most recently portrayed the role of Vera in the contemporary Afro Waltz Opera combining singing, spoken word, and flute for the 2015 launching of the Jongleur Opera Company.
Her desire for all students she works with is that they find joy and accomplishment in learning music. She’s there to support, and guide them in reaching their goals and aspirations, however big or small. Myrtle is available to teach beginner to intermediate flute students, beginner to advanced vocal students and beginner/intermediate piano students.
