Originally from Winnipeg, Rachel began studying clarinet at age 9 and has spent most of her schooling and early teaching career in North Carolina where she maintained a studio of saxophone and clarinet students ranging from age 9-14 from the years 2009-2011. After graduating from University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2013 with a concentration in clarinet performance, Rachel moved back to Canada to pursue playing and teaching clarinet.
Here in Montreal, Rachel is currently completing her Bachelors in Clarinet Performance along with a Psychology minor at McGill University. As a musician, Rachel has played in various orchestras across Montreal and is a dynamic member of chamber music ensembles of many different genres and instrumentations.
As a teacher, she has worked and taught with programs such as the McGill Conservatory Day Camp as a counselor in the summer of 2015 and also helps and a teaching assistant for the Conservatory’s Little Musician’s Program at McGill University.
Rachel’s primary focus as a teacher is to offer her students a fun and safe space to foster creativity and self-expression while also building the fundamental technical skills to master the clarinet or saxophone with ease and efficiency. Her lesson plans are structured around each individual student’s level to target and improve weaknesses and foster and nourish the strengths of each student. She believes there is no wrong age to start learning music and has had experience teaching all ages (age 4-50). While Rachel’s primary focus of study is classical music, she is experienced in all genres varying from jazz, contemporary, funk, hip-hop, rock, pop and even Balkan style jazz!
